It is with great sadness that we report that classmate Carolyn Giffin, known to friends as “Giffy,” has passed away.
According to media reports in Sacramento, where she lived, Carolyn died in a house fire early on January 16. She was 80.
Carolyn, whose married name was Carolyn Conrad, and who had two sons, Edward and Erick, lived alone. According to her sister, Barbara Ashland, the fire, which swept through her two-story house, is being investigated.
Carolyn's youngest Sister, Nancy, predeceased Carolyn by 2 days of brain cancer.
Three years ago, Carolyn posted the news that a brother of hers had esophageal cancer, and added: “I realize how tenuous life is. How we need to nourish all those in our lives.”
At Oakland High, the popular Carolyn served as Commissioner of Girls’ Affairs in spring of 1962. She attended our class reunions, helped organize one of them, and remained in touch with classmates.
Carolyn's sister Barbara has provided details on the memorial service for Giffy. It will take place March 8 at All Saints Episcopal Church, 2076 Sutterville Road in Sacramento. The service is at 1 p.m.
