Comments:

Performed and enjoyed just about everything in journalism, reporting, editing etc. Finally was daily columnist in Sacramento for seven years, then two years as editor of a small daily. Taught six years and advised for the school newspaper at Cal State Hayward.
Meanwhile, my wife of 52-plus years (as of 2018), Nancy Anne, did most of the kid-raising, taught for several years, worked for a congressman, edited copy on a large daily newspaper, wrote a couple of books for the National School Safety Center, and concluded her career at Cal State Hayward as a writer/editor for the university and its alumni association. We retired together in 2004.
As columnist, I had time to get back in shape, ranking nationally in the pentathlon, winning the Western States 1500-meter championship. Great fun, but wore out both hips. Having two new ones, I figure that the implants on average this have lowered my age.
I'm no longer writing a column but confining myself mostly to creative writing and to fuming over the decadent state of contemporary poetry.
After enjoying our life in the mountains east of Sonora for 13 years we decided it was time to stop sweating out the wildfire season (from about April to November) and to recognize that shoveling snow was no longer recreational. Thus, we have moved back to Sacramento County (Fair Oaks) where we lived for about 18 years and where our children did most of their growing up.

School Story:

A wise friend, the late Ron Schrap, once told me the best thing we could say about our high school years is "I'm sorry." I can only add that I hope to have matured miles from those days -- starting when I was about 35.

Best to all.

"D Day" for a "B day." No way your family can forget, until they are as old as we. Many more happy returns.

Ancient Horace is quoted in the interrogative, "Do you count your birthdays thankfully?"
I think this ill punctuated, for it should be the imperative, "Do count your birthdays thankfully!"
Hope yours is most happy.

Call him not old whose visionary brain
Holds o'er the past its undivided reign.
For him in vain the envious seasons roll
Who bears eternal summer in his soul.
-- Oliver Wendell Holmes.

Many happy returns, Russel.

Well, first off, thank you for your service. I hadn't read your profile all these years since the OHS '62 50-year reunion. So, happy birthday. Keep having 'em.
One memory of you comes to mind is that you would run around with James Porter, and though perhaps half his size, you could eat twice as much as he. How did you do it?

Happy birthday (soon). Perhaps you could celebrate with smoke turkey, smoked ribs or smoked tri-tip. Just stay out of the smoke yourself.

Who well lives, long lives; for this age of ours
Should not be numbered by years, days, and hours. -- so wrote some dude known as Seigneur Du Bartas in the 16th century.

Keep living well for many happy returns.

Seventy-five -- three quarters of a century. Here are some cheery thoughts:
Age loves to give good precepts to console itself for being no longer able to give bad examples. -- La Rochefoucauld

The fruit of old age is the memory of abundant blessings previously acquired. -- Cicero

No wise man ever wished to be younger. -- Jonathan Swift

Father Time is not always a hard parent, and, though he tarries for none of his children, often lays his hand lightly on those who have used him well. -- Dickens

Call him not old whose visionary brain
Holds o'er the past its undivided reign.
For him in vain the envious seasons roll
Who bears eternal summeer in his soul.
-- O.W. Holmes

I am still learning. -- Michelangelo

Our nature here is not unlike our wine;
Some sorts when old continue brisk and fine. -- Sir John Denham

Goodness! I love books of quotations. The latter pair of quotes sure applies to you, Ben. Happy birthday, and many more.
